Go Ahead Eagles is a Dutch professional football club from Deventer. Home games are played at their own stadium, De Adelaarshorst.
After its founding, Go Ahead initially played on the pitches of UD, another football club in Deventer. From 1906 onwards, Go Ahead played for several seasons in Diepenveen, on a pitch near the area known as ‘De Halve Maan’ (The Half Moon).
Later, Go Ahead played on what were called ‘De Zes Veldjes’ (The Six Fields), a number of sports fields north of the railway bridge in the floodplains on the ‘other side’ (i.e., west) of the IJssel (this area is now part of the ‘Ossenwaard’ nature reserve).
Since May 2, 1920, Go Ahead has played in its own stadium De Adelaarshorst, where Go Ahead Eagles still plays today.
On May 1, 2020, Go Ahead was supposed to celebrate its centennial at the Adelaarshorst during the match against Top Oss. Unfortunately, the match was canceled due to COVID-19.
History
Go Ahead, the club from which Go Ahead Eagles emerged, was founded on December 2, 1902, as Be Quick. Upon joining the NVB (Dutch Football Association) in 1905, the club was forced to change its name (due to the existing Groningen club Be Quick), which it did to Go Ahead.
On July 31, 1971, when the amateur and professional divisions split, the addition “Eagles” was added to the name at the behest of then-coach Barry Hughes. The amateurs continued as DVV Go Ahead.
In the UEFA ranking of the best clubs in Europe, Go Ahead Eagles was ranked 166th on August 16, 2019 with 0.250 points.
